Porn has hijacked sexuality (Gail Dines - SMH)
An interesting article citing recent attitudes to porn, but a poor, myopic conclusion drawn by the author:
Many of the men I talk to believe that porn sex is what women want, and they become upset and angry when their sex partner, perhaps their wife, girlfriend, or a one night hook-up, refuses to look or behave like their favourite porn star. The women often refuse to perform the sex acts the men have routinely enjoyed watching, and next to the screaming orgasms and sexual gymnastics of porn sex, real sex with real women starts to feel boring and bland.
Unfortunately the author draws incorrect conclusions:
And this sexual equality is closely linked to economic equality, because the whole sex industry rests on women with few choices.
She seems unaware of the gay-porn industry which per capita (of men) is more widely used than by heterosexual men (at least by my anecodal observations).
The underlying cause is society's "Peak Disconnect" which is enabled and abetted by technology (now the Internet, previously camera technology//magazines).
The solution is not about empowering women (they already enjoy higher quality of life, as evidenced by their living longer, and in better health, and far lower suicide rates) .
The solution is to recognise the 'big-picture' situation, and to begin the reconnection with spirit that we long ago forewent for the easy and expedient use of technology1 As explained, part of this is natural (the individuation of the human pysche). Cultrually we have peaked and now need to begin to reconnect with that part of ourselves that technology mimmicks for us -- our inner abilities to connect, cure and create.
- 1. A reconnection that would naturally see us more sexually involved, in more diverse, multidimensional ways (as implied by the behaviours of Bonobo monkeys who have matriarchal societies).
